What is Molluscum Contagiosum?
Molluscum contagiosum is a common and harmless viral infection of the skin. It is contagious and can be caught from another person by direct contact. It is more common in children and young adults but can occur at any age.
In children, the condition is quite easy to recognise. The molluscum contagiosum virus causes small painless, pink or pearly white lumps that can appear virtually anywhere on the body. The top of the lump is indented and contains a white core. The infection is not severe, as it only affects the skin and will eventually disappear without treatment, although this may take some time. Individual lumps often disappear after about two months, but often there will be more than one lump, and they will not disappear until 6 to 9 months. In some case, the virus can last for up to 2 years.
These small wart-like lumps are dome-like in shape, with a shiny appearance. The most notable feature is the dimpled centre, which has a thick creamy off-white substance inside. They appear as one to two spots to start with, which can within a few days cover the entire body.
Doctors can usually diagnose molluscum contagiosum by examining the lesions. But it’s also possible to take a sample of one of the nodules to confirm a diagnosis.
Several medical studies indicate that children prone to atopic dermatitis and eczema can have more molluscum lesions that last longer. Also people with eczema can be more susceptible to flare ups, infections and irritations as a defect in the skin barrier allows allergens to penetrate the skin more easily causing itching and inflammation.
There are no long-term ill effects following molluscum contagiosum. People who are immune-suppressed may have more lesions and these may take longer to clear up.

It is important to keep the skin clean and clear of the virus to stop it spreading. Manuka Biotic antibacterial Body Wash will help with this.
Once you have washed the skin then dab any infected or broken spots with Manuka Biotic Manuka Oil. This will help kill any bacteria that may infect the area.
Lastly apply Manuka Biotic Body Lotion over the whole area. It doesn’t need to be rubbed into the skin. This will help provide relief for any itchiness and being antibacterial and antiviral it will help prevent any infection, inflammation of the area. Plus if it’s not itchy your little one will be less inclined to scratch and spread the virus.
It can take some time to see results so persevere and apply regularly.
